Hey guys! Today we’re talking about how to get out of your comfort zone and what the secret is to actually do it.
First of all, we all know that it’s really necessary for an entrepreneur to get out of your comfort zone. If you want to make more money, launch a new offer, do something new, change your service… Basically, anything and everything an entrepreneur does is out of their comfort zone.
What about creating new types of content? Showing up consistently? Or maybe being visible all the time? You have to do new things. You have to try new things.
First, let me tell you a little story about me. I actually love getting out of my comfort zone believe it or not. It’s because of the results I’ve seen in the past from getting out of my comfort zone! And it all started back when I was in high school.
I was 16 or 17 at the time. In Belgium, we primarily speak Dutch and French. I speak Dutch (usually), and I decided I wanted to learn French. Like real French because my dad was raised half Dutch/half French and he spoke French really well (and I was a little jealous).
I knew I was pretty good at French in school, except I didn’t really speak French. I just understood the grammar and vocabulary, so I thought, how hard could it be? So, get this. I made the crazy decision to switch schools, just to learn French!
I completely switched from going to a school very close to my home with all my friends, to something entirely different. I was away from home (for an entire week at a time), and I didn’t know a single person. Talk about crazy, right?
Luckily, I had a ton of support from my family. Even when I was a kid, I always loved trying new things and setting big goals for myself, and they always supported me. This was one of the biggest, craziest decisions of my life. It sucked in the beginning. It was super tough. I cried… a lot. But I stuck with it and ended up being the best experience, ever.
Want to know what my second-best experience was? Attending a University in Spain… where no one spoke a lick of English… and I had never spoken Spanish. It was a great time.
All, because I went out of my comfort zone! Even after college, I was still taking action. I had a great resume with two different Masters, attended a business school, fluent in multiple languages… I was rockin’ it!
I landed the “perfect” marketing job at an international company, but something didn’t seem right. I knew I was destined for more. I didn’t know it back then, but I certainly feel it now.
And so, my entrepreneurial journey began. As you know, Dutch is my native language, yet I decided to start a business in English. To me, it wouldn’t be fun if I had stayed in my native language. It wasn’t the dream I had for myself. I wanted to learn perfect English, and here I am! I am showing up on video and live streams. Wherever I show up, it’s in English.
Now, don’t get me wrong. This wasn’t always the case before my first experience getting out of my comfort zone. I was always scared to get out of my comfort zone. It’s always scary to do new things!
You’re afraid of failure, of judgment from your friends, family, and even complete strangers. What if someone hates what you put out? What if you end up not liking it and now you’re stuck? Whatever your fear is, you have to leave it behind and take action.
Here’s an example. You’re in Zone A, which is your safe zone. You want to get to zone B, which is out of your comfort zone. You know, the scary zone! The more you go from safe to scary, the safer your scary zone becomes and that will be your safe zone.
The new stuff is your comfort zone, but then you’ll be super comfortable in the stuff that used to be scary. Wrap your head around that! For most, live streams are absolutely terrifying. I can’t hop on a live video! I’m so afraid; maybe I’ll do it next week. Yeah, that sounds good.
Nope, that does NOT sound good. Start going live for one minute, then two minutes, and so on. Say hi to people joining in. For now, just do the bare minimum. As long as you take action, you’re leaving your comfort zone.
Maybe you fear that you’ll mess up. But, did you know you can just delete the video? See! No excuses here! If you can do it once, then you can do it twice. Before you know it, you’re completely out of your comfort zone, AND you’re okay with it. So, the secret to getting out of your comfort zone is simply taking action.
Doing that a couple of times will move you to the next level, and the next, and the next.
Before you know it, you’re ready to take action, ready to try something new. You’re even excited about it because you see the progress you’ve made within not only your business but yourself.
Remember, the only way to ever leave your comfort zone is by taking action!
